Learning a new language is a personal adventure, and who says personal adventure says that you have to do it in your own terms. There are a lot of different ways to learn a language, tutor, online lessons, school, traveling, apps, etc.
However, getting yourself a few books is a proven method that has been around for years. I have been recommending these books to my students for years. I will also make another post for books and comic books, so stay tuned! But for now here is my 5 favourite books that I recommend to all my students.
If you don't feel like reading, here is the video :
THE MUST HAVE - A Bescherelle is a French conjugation book. Make sure to understand before you buy it, it only treats about conjugation, which is not bad considering how hard French conjugation is. It is named in honour of the 19th-century French lexicographer and grammarian Louis-Nicolas Bescherelle.
There is not a student in a French speaking country who didn't grow up with a Bescherelle in his backpack. You use it by referring to the list of verbs, then you will see if the verb is conjugated or if the book sends you to another similar verb. For example, if you look for "changer" you might end up on the page "manger", but it doesn't change the conjugation of the word itself.
If you’re looking to start learning French with a beginner book and then move on to other more advanced and specific books in a series, the Practice Makes Perfect Complete French All-in-One book might work for you. The Practice Makes Perfect French series includes:
Complete French Grammar,
French Sentence Builder,
French Verb Tenses,
Intermediate French Grammar,
and Advanced French Grammar.
The Complete French All-in-One book is a combination of all seven books, whoch means once you have them you have no excuse to not reach your goal. It includes 37 lessons with more than 500 exercises. Learning a language requires to be consistant, and espacially with this serie as their system relies on lots of practice.
Bonus point : the book comes with an app including flashcards and audio with exercises to practice your pronunciation.
Here is a method that I have been using for a long time, privately and in a language school in Canada. Using stories to build your vocabulary and get used to grammar.
This book (and the other ones from the same series) includesss 20 easy-to-read, engaging, and fun stories that will not only help you to significantly expand your vocabulary but also provide you the tools to improve your understanding of the French language. All stories are written using vocabulary you can easily use in your day-to-day conversations. The stories are written with beginner French learners in mind.
However, I recommend this book if you already have some understanding of the French language, because reading for reading won't do anything to make you progress.
At the end of a story, you can test yourself with w few questions to see how well you understood.
It can be a fun practice if you don't feel like sitting and down and practicing grammar for an hour.
Learning with Dummies has been around for many many years. Some people love it, others don't. I personally love the Dummies series. They know what they are doing, they are straight to the point and this one includes 6 books in 1 :

Intermediate French For Dummies
French Verbs For Dummies
French Essentials For Dummies
French Phrases For Dummies
French For Dummies Audio Set
There will always be something to study every day!
If you take the paper version of it, it comes with a CD for the listening part, and the ebook comes with a link where you can just download it, which might be easier nowadays.
Dummies are pretty straight forward regarding learning experiences, so in this book you get 800 pages of learning materials and exercises.
French is a beautiful language but can be quite difficult to learn. Whether you need to learn the language for a French class, or for business or leisure travel, French for Dummies All-In-One makes it easier. I honestly think it benefits everyone, from beginners to advanced.
Easy French Step by Step, this one is pretty self-explanatory, since you will learn French step by step. And this why I personally like this book. If you are the kind of person who doesn't know what to do next or at what pace you should be learning, this is perfect for you.
It will provide you with a solid background in grammar with over 300 frequent verbs. You can practice with all the exercises and readings to help you.
