20 French Words Where The Final S is Pronounced

If you know your way around French pronunciation a little bit (if you don’t, check out my free pronunciation course here), you know that silent letters are a big part of the French language. It takes time to know what to pronounce and what not to pronounce. One of the most common silent letters is the last letter of the word. The good news here is that the last letter, S, will be pronounced in all these words!

99.99% of the time, French pronunciation looks like this:

Une souris  A mouse
The final S is silent

Deux tables  Two tables
The plural of words is silent

Now, let’s look have a look at the short list of French words where the final S is pronounced.

Plus

Plus means more in French.
Il a plus d’argent que toi.
He has more money than you.
Plus is a very particular word in French, it follows some very specific grammar rules and the final S will be pronounced depending on the rule that it follows. You can watch a whole explanation about it below.

An easy rule is to remember that if plus means more, the S will be pronounced. There is more into it, but that’s a good first step.

Une vis

Une vis a screw
La vis est tombée dans le trou.
The screw fell in the hole

Un tournevis

Un tournevisa screwdriver

Est-ce que tu as un tournevis plat ?
Do you have a flat screwdriver?

Un ours

Un oursa bear
L’ours essaye d’attraper un poisson.
The bear is trying to catch a fish.

Le tennis

Le tennistennis
J’aime jouer au tennis avec mes amis.
I like playing tennis with my friends.

Un os

Un osa bone
Donne un os au chien s’il te plaît
Please give a bone to the dog

The word OS in French has 2 different pronunciations depending on the number. If it’s singular UN OS, the final S will be pronounced. If it’s plural, the S won’t be pronounced.

Un virus

Un virusa virus
On en a marre du virus – We have had enough of the virus 

Un campus

Un campus – a campus
Le campus est fermé pour l’été.
The campus is closed for the summer.

Un oasis

Un oasis – an oasis
L’oasis se trouve au milieu du désert.
The oasis is located in the middle of the desert.

Du couscous

Du couscousCouscous
Le couscous est un plat délicieux.
Couscous is a delicious dish.

Les cassis

Les cassis – Blackcurrants

Est-ce que tu préfères les cassis ou les framboises ?
Do you prefer blackcurrants are raspberries?

Un cactus

A cactus a cactus
N’arrose pas ce cactus trop souvent.
Don’t water this cactus too often.

Un lys

Un lysa lily
Ses fleurs préférées sont les lys.
Her favourite flowers are lilys.

Un ananas

Un ananasa pineapple
L’ananas est un fruit difficile à couper.
Pineapple is a hard fruit to cut.
The word ANANAS can be pronounced with or without the S

Du maïs

Du maïscorn
Le maïs contient beaucoup de vitamine B.
Corn contains a lot of vitamin B.

Un iris

Un irisan iris
L’iris est la partie colorée de l’œil.
The iris is the coloured part of the eye.

Un as

Un asan ace
L’as est plus fort que le roi.
The ace is stronger than the king.

Le cannabis

Le cannabis – cannabis
Le cannabis est légal dans certains pays.
Cannabis is legal in some countries.

Un utérus

Un utérusa uterus

L’utérus est une partie du système reproducteur.
The uterus is a part of the reproductive system.
